Not an Official USPTO Tool
PatentIQ is an independent, unofficial tool developed for personal research and productivity. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or operated by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), the Department of Commerce, or any other government agency. The USPTO name, logo, and data are the property of the United States government.
Data Source
All patent application data displayed on this platform is retrieved in real time from the USPTO Open Data Portal (ODP) public API at api.uspto.gov. This data is made publicly available by the USPTO under its open data initiative and is the same underlying data accessible through USPTO public search tools.
Data Accuracy & Limitations
Caching
To reduce load times, aggregate count queries (total applications, status breakdowns, filing counts) are cached at the network edge for up to 24 hours. Row-level data (application lists, examiner rosters) is cached for 5 minutes. Live figures from the USPTO may differ slightly from values displayed during a cache window.
Examiner Roster
The examiner roster on the Art Unit Stats page is inferred from active pending applications (non-final and final rejection cases) currently grouped under the selected art unit. This method:
  • May miss examiners who have no currently pending office actions (all cases recently decided)
  • May include examiners from recently transferred applications where art unit metadata has not yet updated in the USPTO index
  • Reflects a sample of up to 200 active cases — very large art units may not be fully represented
There is no direct examiner-roster endpoint in the USPTO ODP API. This feature is a best-effort inference from available metadata.
Statistics & Rates
Allowance rates, abandonment rates, and other aggregate statistics are computed from records indexed in the USPTO ODP at query time. These figures:
  • May not match official USPTO statistical reports, which use different methodologies and cohort definitions
  • Are based on application-level status fields which reflect the most recent known status in the index
  • Do not account for continuation chains, RCE cycles, or inter-partes review outcomes unless those are reflected in the application status field
Examiner & Art Unit Assignments
Examiner name and art unit fields in the USPTO database reflect the assignment at the time of last indexing. Applications are regularly transferred between art units and reassigned between examiners. Historical assignment data may not be updated retroactively in all cases.
Difficulty Score
The examiner difficulty score is a proprietary composite metric computed from event history data (office actions, RCEs, appeals, interviews, etc.) sampled from up to 100 recent applications. It is an experimental, unofficial indicator intended to surface relative prosecution complexity — not an authoritative measure of examiner performance or quality. It should not be used to evaluate, compare, or make decisions about USPTO employees.
No Legal Advice
Nothing on this platform constitutes legal advice. Patent prosecution strategy, examiner-specific insights, statistical summaries, PTAB trial outcomes, and all other content are provided for informational purposes only. This tool does not create an attorney-client relationship. Consult a registered patent attorney or agent (USPTO registration required) for legal guidance on any specific matter.
Public Records
All patent application data displayed is a matter of public record. Under 35 U.S.C. § 122, patent applications are published 18 months after their earliest effective filing date, or upon patent issuance, whichever occurs first. No confidential, unpublished, or sealed application data is accessed or displayed by this tool.
Third-Party API Dependency
This tool depends entirely on the USPTO Open Data Portal API. Data availability, accuracy, response times, and completeness are subject to USPTO system availability and their own terms of service. The USPTO may modify, rate-limit, or discontinue API access at any time without notice. PatentIQ has no control over the underlying data and makes no guarantees about API uptime or data freshness.
No Warranty
This tool is provided "as is" without warranty of any kind, express or implied. The developer makes no representations about the accuracy, reliability, completeness, or fitness for a particular purpose of any data or feature presented. Use of this tool is entirely at your own risk. The developer is not liable for any decisions made in reliance on data shown here.
